Breaking: Sonny Bill Williams Expected to Sign with Toronto Wolfpack

According to both Danny Weidler of Nine News Sydney and the BBC, the Toronto Wolfpack were successful in their pursuit of Sonny Bill Williams.

The deal that Weidler is reporting for two years and $10-million, although it’s not immediately clear what currency (AUS, CDN) it is.

Sonny Bill Williams has been a target for a long time for the Wolfpack and owner David Argyle, dating back to at least February. Likely longer. Williams will take up one of the Wolfpack’s two Marquee Player spots, likely forcing all of Darcy Lussick’s contract for 2020 onto the salary cap.

We explored the ramifications of a Sonny Bill Williams mega-deal here.

This will be Williams’ third stint in Rugby League, but first outside of Australia. He played with Cantebury from 2004-2008, and upon his return suited up for the Sydney Roosters from 2013-14.

He is also a two-time Rugby (Union) World Cup winner and 7-0 in his professional boxing career.

The 2020 Super League fixtures were announced Tuesday. Toronto will kick off their first Super League campaign February 2nd against the Castleford Tigers.

This space will be updated as more details become available.
